What is the role of storytelling in fostering change? Cartoonist and Director of the Visual Narrative MFA at Boston University Joel Christian Gill’s closing keynote at the 2023 PIT-UN Convening.

Today’s weather, on this beautiful fall day, is the perfect segue into the story I want to tell. Some of you will be familiar with it by the end of this story. It happened around 1940, in a very similar part of a series of events.

It was September, a time of year when it's sweater weather. There were these four kids in the south of France in the mid-1940s, in September 1940, right in the middle of World War Two. They were just kids, hanging out and heading out to a wooded area. Can you imagine? It was not much different from where we are, just a tiny area, with pine trees mixed with the fall weather, fallen leaves. These four kids and their dog were out there. The dog was running around, and it ended up falling into a hole. The kids go down into the hole to try to find the dog, and what they discovered is this subterranean mix of all of these caves – the 17,000 cave paintings of Lascaux…
