Warangal Collector Vakati Karuna said special cell has been set up at Collectorate to help people in distress due to rains. In view of the intermittent rain in Warangal, the Collector declared holiday for educational institutions.WARANGAL/KARIMNAGAR: Normal life was affected in Warangal and Karimnagar districts with several areas getting flooded and a number of streams and rivulets swollen due to heavy rains in the last two days.
Areas of NTR Nagar and Maisamma Nagar in Warangal were inundated forcing people to take shelter in public halls and schools. In Warangal, the highest rainfall of 80 mm was recorded on Thursday in Nallabally, followed by Hanamkonda 40 mm and Warangal town 20 mm. Thanks to the heavy rains, all the lakes were full. Some of them were overflowing causing anxiety among people living in low-lying areas. Bhadrakali temple lake in Warangal was brimming over as was Somidi lake in Kazipet town. Warangal TDP president G Satyanarayana and others visited NTR Nagar. They urged municipal commissioner Sarfaraz Ahmed to take up intense relief and rehabilitation measures.
District collector Vakati Karuna inspected government schools and social welfare hostels in the city. She held a meeting with engineering staff and RDOs of Mahbubabad, Mulug, Warangal, Jangaon and Narsampet and directed them to step up surveillance in view of heavy rain forecast by IMD. A control room was set up in district collector's office. In Karimnagar, district administration took up restoration of SRSP canal at Manala village in Malyala mandal. The canal breached late on Tuesday night. About 300 families had to be evacuated to safety.
The current spell of rains in the state led to overflowing drains and rivulets in Warangal and Nalgonda districts. In Guduru village of Warangal district, village revenue officer Shabbir Ali was washed away and his body was found later by a group of youths.
Reports of swollen rivulets cutting off road traffic were received from various parts of Warangal and Nalgonda districts.
In Guduru of Warangal district, police said Shabbir Ali was attempting to cross a flooded stretch of road on his two-wheeler and got washed away by the strong current. His body was later found downstream by youths out to catch fish in the flood waters.
Meanwhile, fire services staff from Janagaon rescued three persons who got caught in flood waters at Yerra Cheruvu near Valmidi village. The three farmers had gone to their fields when nearby stream suddenly swelled by flood water forcing them to climb up trees.In Palakurthy mandal of Warangal, timely action by sub-inspector of police Venkateswaralu who pressed into service a backhoe loader to dig a trench across the road to allow fast rising water from engulfing a populated housing colony. Close by, a stretch of about half-a-km of the Palakurthi-Vishnuru road was washed way with local streams in spate. Rising water levels in the Bondivagu stream in Warangal that runs near the city resulted in the flooding of NTR Nagar on Hunter Road around 7 pm on Wednesday. With water entering the low lying locality, nearly a 100 families were shifted by the authorities to a safer location - a function hall located nearby around 8 pm. Also during the wee hours of Wednesday the authorities shifted, families living in about 200 huts in Maisamma Nagar on Fort Road following flooding in the area after heavy rain that lashed the city from 2 am to 4 am on Wednesday.
The Bondivagu which begins from near Urs-Karimabad, originally used to empty itself into the famous Bhadrakali lake in the city. However, about 20 years ago it was decided to turn the lake into a drinking water source for the city. As a part of improving water quality in Bhadrakali lake, Bondivagu and some other streams were diverted to prevent water from homes and agricultural fields entering the water body.
Bondivagu stream now carries water and empties itself into smaller water bodies away from Bhadrakali lake. However, the normally sedate stream began brimming with water from the heavy rains that have been lashing the city and its environs since Tuesday.
In Nalgonda district, Bhuvanagiri division received heavy rains beginning Tuesday night resulting in Musi river getting into spate. Rains in the district only added to the river's flood level with rain water from in and around Hyderabad finding its way into it. In all, the 14 mandals in the division received a total of 84 cm of rain with each mandal recording between 4 cm and 21 cm of rain. Traffic between Pochampalli and Bibinagar was severely affected with Musi flowing over a bridge between the two towns.
