Boils and carbuncles are skin infections that occur when hair follicles or oil glands become infected with bacteria, typically Staphylococcus aureus.

Boils:

Cause: Boils start as red, tender lumps that fill with pus as the infection progresses. They can be painful and usually occur in areas where there's hair and sweat, such as the neck, face, shoulders, armpits, and buttocks.
Treatment: Most small boils can be treated at home by applying warm compresses to the affected area several times a day. This helps the boil to drain. Keep the area clean and covered to prevent the infection from spreading. Sometimes, antibiotics might be necessary if the infection becomes severe.
Carbuncles:

Cause: Carbuncles are clusters of boils that often connect to each other under the skin. They are larger and more severe than boils, causing deeper infections.
Treatment: Similar to boils, warm compresses can help encourage drainage. However, because carbuncles are larger and more severe, they might require medical attention. A doctor might need to drain the carbuncle surgically and prescribe antibiotics to treat the infection.
