After the breakthrough of D-Day in 1944 and the liberation of Paris, the next Allied objective was the destruction of the monumental Siegfried Line. For this, Eisenhower together with other military leaders ordered the mobilization of seven armies towards the East, through the Hürtgen Forest. However, the dense and dark forest made the march a nightmare for the Allies, who quickly found themselves locked in hostile terrain that impeded both advance and artillery and air support.
