FLAWINNE, BELGIUM — An armed man wearing a balaclava who tried to drive his car through the gates of a military barracks in Belgium and fled when soldiers fired several shots has been arrested, Belgian prosecutors said.

The man attempted to enter the facility in Flawinne, close to the city of Namur, but after failing to do so, fled, prosecutors said.

"The individual has just been arrested. It is important to calm people. There is nothing to suggest there are others involved," prosecutor Vincent Macq said.

No one was injured and the gunman fled after soldiers from the barracks opened fire on the car.

The car owner is said to have been identified after the car was found in Belgrade, near Flawinne. Bomb squad officials were called to the scene after witnesses said the man was carrying something heavy in a case.

No motive has yet been established for the attack.
