Remains of the Monon in Indianapolis

Описание к видео Remains of the Monon in Indianapolis

Known as Indiana's railroad, the Monon operated the shortest (by mileage) mainline between Indianapolis and Chicago. However, due to various factors, it was never a popular route for freight and survived primarily on passenger services. When passenger operations on the Monon ended in 1959, the route gradually declined. When the Monon was merged into the L&N in the early 70s, it was seen as a duplicate to more profitable lines and was abandoned in segments, with the trackage through Indianapolis finally being cut from the CSX system in 1984. The route is now a rail trail, but retains much of its Monon heritage and infrastructure.
