Some analysts argue that if Xi Jinping had truly consolidated full control—if, for instance, Zhang Youxia had already been completely dealt with—then the propaganda machine would have long since shifted into overdrive. The entire Party, the military, and the nation would be awash in slogans proclaiming loyalty to a single supreme authority. But that is not what we are seeing.
On the other hand, if the anti-Xi faction had achieved a major breakthrough, it would be hard to explain Xi Jinping’s frequent and prominent appearances in the media. His repeated public visibility seems to send only one message: “I’m still here.”
