STORYLINE:
The United Nations Population Fund (UNPFA) announced on Tuesday more than half of the world's population is living in urban areas, pointing out that a third of these residents live in "precarious conditions."
The report singled out countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America and said eighty per cent of the world population will be concentrated in these continents.
Arie Hoekman, the UNPFA's representative in Mexico said the number of people residing in urban areas is currently 3.3 billion.
"We believe that number will increase to 5.2 (b) billion by the year 2030," Hoekman added.
Hoekman also said 1.1 (b) billion people worldwide live in "precarious conditions."
According to the UNPFA report, which is scheduled to be released on Wednesday, the population shift could "enhance development and promote sustainability or it could deepen poverty and accelerate environmental degradation."
Mexico City is currently home to more than 8 (m) million residents, many of whom live in poverty.
It is considered to be the second largest city in the world.
