HMPV Explained - Human Metapneumovirus Symptoms, Transmission and Treatment Options

If you came down with a respiratory infection in the spring and it wasn’t influenza (flu), COVID-19 or RSV, it may have been a virus you’ve never heard of. That’s because cases of human metapneumovirus, or HMPV, surged across the U.S. in March 2023. Dr. Dean Blumberg, chief of pediatric infectious diseases at UC Davis Children's Hospital, explains the symptoms of HMPV and when it can cause serious complications, as well as how it is transmitted and treated.
