Some Definitions:
Gene: Unit of heredity which is transferred from a parent to offspring and may determine some characteristic of the offspring.
Allele: one of two or more alternative forms of a gene found at the same place on a chromosome.
Autosome: One of the numbered chromosomes, as opposed to the sex chromosomes.
Phenotype: the set of observable characteristics of an individual resulting from the interaction of its genotype with the environment. This is the physical appearance of the fish in our context.
Genotype: The combinations of genetic codes that are responsible for the observable. Typically, two alleles (one from each parent) in the context of our guppies.
Homozygous: A guppy that has inherited two identical alleles for the same gene.
Heterozygous: A guppy that has inherited two different alleles for the same gene.
