As a professional actor, your job in your auditions is to tell the story from your unique point of view using the writer’s words.

A scene’s story involves characters and a storyline that evolves. In order for a story to be told the right way in your self tape auditions, we on the casting director side need to see how you interact and personalize the other characters in the scene. This makes for an engaging self tape audition.

This is why a virtual reader is essential.

Having a virtual reader helps you:
✅ Create the reality between the characters in your scenes
✅ Personalize who the other character(s) are to you in the scene
✅ Create strong opinions that help you come across believable

As a casting director I want to watch how you respond moment to moment in your scene. That’s why you need to find a virtual reader so we can see your take on the scene.

Another benefit of having an actor read your self tape audition with you, is they can also help you with other aspects of the self tape process like helping you choose the best take.

Having a second set of eyes on your self tape is ideal because sometimes you’re so focused on getting it right, that you miss believable moments that stand out to the viewer. Which means, the more believable take is best.

Quick Do's and Don'ts
✅DO find a talented actor friend so they can bring a good performance that enhances your audition.
✅DO prepare your reader. Let them read through the scene so they understand what's happening in the story.
✅DO give direction to your reader.

❌DON'T put the reader too far from the device you’re shooting on.
❌DON'T let them read in a robotic or monotone voice.
❌DON'T let them overact or be vocally louder then you.
