Today’s walk begins near Emsphere shopping mall, just by the Phrom Phong BTS station, a new landmark in central Bangkok. From here, we’ll head west toward Asoke, following the elevated walkway before stepping down into the busy heart of the city.

But the real change in pace happens when we turn into Soi 16, a narrow alley that might seem quiet at first glance.

Come lunchtime on a weekday, though, this soi transforms completely. Office workers and professionals flood out into the street, and food vendors line the sidewalks with everything from tropical fruits and grilled meats to steamed corn, fried sweet potato balls, and all kinds of comforting local dishes.

If you venture a little deeper, you’ll find a hidden market tucked away inside with even more food stalls and shaded tables. It’s only open on weekdays, and it’s one of those places that shows you how everyday Bangkokians satisfy their lunchtime cravings.
