An ion channel is a specialized protein embedded in the cell membrane that allows ions to pass through it in a regulated manner. These channels are essential for various physiological processes, including the generation and transmission of electrical signals in nerve and muscle cells, maintenance of the cell's resting membrane potential, and regulation of cell volume. Ion channels can be highly selective, permitting only specific types of ions, such as sodium, potassium, calcium, or chloride, to cross the membrane. They can open or close in response to different stimuli, such as changes in voltage across the membrane, the binding of a chemical messenger, or mechanical stress, thereby precisely controlling ion flow and cellular function.
