He recently revealed his heart is functioning at only 25% after being hospitalized for severe pneumonia and heart pains. Medical experts describe a “black heart” as either tissue discoloration from alkaptonuria, a rare genetic disorder, or necrosis caused by oxygen deprivation from restricted blood flow, which can result from chronic substance abuse. Stimulants like cocaine and Adderall can narrow blood vessels, starving heart tissue and causing severe damage. Ray J is now on strict bedrest and taking eight medications, including Jardiance, Entresto, and Lipitor, aimed at stabilizing his heart and reducing risks of heart failure or stroke. Doctors have cautioned he may require a pacemaker or defibrillator in the future and stressed total abstinence from alcohol and smoking. The singer, barred from seeing his children due to a protective order, says the situation has prompted him to commit to lifestyle changes. He also plans to explore alternative treatments, including a trip to Haiti, hoping to strengthen his health and emerge as a better person.
