In this video you can drive along on Bundesstraße B207 and Autobahn A1 E47 from the ferry terminal at Puttgarden to Neustadt in Holstein. This is one of the busiest ferry routes connecting 2 countries in Europe but will be replaced in the future by a massive under sea tunnel.

The ferry between Puttgarden and Rødbyhavn goes about every half an hour and maybe even 15 minutes during peak times. It takes about 45 minutes to do the crossing. From the boat the construction sites for the Fehmahrnbelttunnel were visible on both sides, with the Danish side having made the most progress so far.

The tunnel will be a so-called 'sinking tunnel' with the prefab tunnel elements hugging the sea floor once completed. The tunnel will be just over 18 kilometers long and cost a staggering 7+ billion euros. The road to planning and construction start was a long one, especially on the German side. There was lots of protest against the tunnel and road connection on the peninsula of Fehmahrn, by both locals and businesses like the ferry line operator.

The tunnel will however cut travel time in the future by about 30-40 minutes, especially if you take the waiting time for the ferry into account. This will bring the metropolitan area of Copenhagen / Malmö much closer to mainland Europe and the Scandinavian countries in general much more accessible from the South.

In order for it to be successful, the road (including the B207) would likely need to be upgraded as well. Its profile, as you can see, is already quite wide as it is, but probably it would need to be widened even more to establish a bottleneck free connection between the tunnel and the A1 from Heiligenhafen. Whether this is something that they will get done in time on the German side considering all the existing objections, is the big question.
