About this Book:-

The Six Pillars of Self Esteem is an amazing book by the late Nathaniel Branden, a highly respected psychologist that dedicated decades of his life in the study of self esteem and how to cultivate it in individuals. The basic premise of the book is that self esteem comes from within and that in order to cultivate high self esteem, you need to integrate six key practices into your every day life, and over time your self esteem will increase. The six key practices are:-

1. The practice of consciousness - this is all about paying attention to what's going on in your life. Can also be described as mindfulness. Noticing feelings, actions, thoughts, desires, the world around you - paying attention to things that are going on inside you and externally. Integrating consciousness into your daily life is the first practice

2. The practice of acceptance - when you see problems/issues in your personal life that need resolving then you must focus on accepting the situation for what it is rather than acting in denial or burying your head in the sand. Without acceptance you will be unable to improve the problems that you face.

3. The practice of Self responsibility - you are responsible for everything that happens in your life. Self responsibility is the opposite of being a victim, whereby you are at mercy of external influencers in your environment like a sailing boat being tossed around on the ocean. You take rightful responsibility and ownership of all areas of your life.

4. The practice of self assertiveness - if your needs, values and wants are being violated then you need to show the self respect and courage needed to stand up for yourself. Each time you don't show self assertiveness to stand up for yourself, your self esteem takes a hit.

5. The practice of living purposefully - live a life of purpose and direction. Figure out what you want in all areas of your life, figure out what resources you need to get there, determine an action plan and go after it. Don't float through life with no direction and purpose.

6. The practice of personal integrity - live your life true to the values that you deem important. If you value honesty, don't lie. If you value seeing things through to the end, then don't quit. Each time you violate your value system, your self esteem is attacked. This means doing some work to figure out what your values are and striving to live your life in line with them.

One of the important things to realise about self esteem is that it's not something that can be solved quickly, overnight. I need to set some expectations here:- if you have low self esteem then the best thing you can do is to make a deal with yourself that over the next 6 months you are going to consciously integrate these 6 practices into your every day life. Over time, these practices will start to become second nature as they move into your subconscious - it will become a lot easier through time. Expect the first month to be difficult, understand in advance that you're going to want to quit, but make a deal with yourself to follow through no matter what.
