DECIMALS

•Decimal is a way of writing a number using a place value of tenths, hundredths, thousandths etc.•The dotcalled decimal point is placed after the units place and is used to separate the whole number part from the fractional part.•Decimal fractions are the special fractions with denominators as 10, 100 or 1000..... and so on. The numerator can be any natural number.•The special property of decimal fraction is that the denominator can be replaced by a point or dot.The decimal fraction is made up of two parts:1.The part before the point is called the integral or whole number part.2.The part after the point is called fractional part.DECIMAL PLACESThe number of digits after the point represents te number of decimal places.Example: 17.032 has3 decimal places and 0.96 as 2 decimal places.DECIMAL FRACTIONSExpress 425.724 in expanded form:400 + 20 + 5 + 710+ 2100+ 41000DECIMAL PLACE VALUE CHARTPlaceThousandHundredTensunitsDecimal pointTenthsHundredthThousandthsValue1000100101.110110011000LIKE AND UNIKE DECIMALDecimal fractions with equal number of decimal places are called decimals. [ Number of digits in the whole number place doesn’t matter]Example: 0.92, 12.57, 1.88 Like decimals•Decimal numbers with different number of decimal places arecalled unline decimals.Changing unlike decimal to like decimal•We have to add as my as zeros we require•Maximum number of decimal places is 3 in case of 4.2000
EQUIVALENT DECIMAL FRACTIONS.Decimals which are equal or have the same value are called equivalent decimal fractions.Example: 0.9 = 0.90 = 0.900 OR910= 90100= 9001000COMPARING DECIMAL FRACTIONFor comparing decimal fractions follow these steps:1.We first check the integral part2.Then the tenth place3.Then the hundredth place and so on•Which is greater? 9.09 or 4.632929[greater than]4 [The number of decimal place do not matter].CONVERSION OF DECIMAL FRACTION INTO FRACTION•Convert the following decimal fractions into fractions(a)0.251-Write the number without the point2-Write 1 in the denominator place.3-Add as many zeros as the number of decimal place=25100(b)12.9 = 12 9102] Convert the following decimal fraction into fractions in lowest terms•0.75 = 75100= 34a) Convert to fractionb) Reduce to lowest terms
CONVERSION OF FACTORS INTO DECIMALExample 1-Convert the fraction into decimal•1910= 1.9 To change fractions into decimal we divide the numerator by the denominator.•One zero means one decimal place.SOME IMPORTANT CONVERSIONS TO REMEMBER2 2 x 2 = 10 4 4 x 25 = 1005 x 2 = 1020 x 25 = 10050 x 2 = 100USE OF DECIMAL IN MONEY•100 paise = 1 rupee. To convert paise into rupees we have to divide paise by 100.•Every whole number has a decimal point at its end though the decimal point is not written.•When we divide a number by 100 the decimal point shifts two places to its left and the divisor 100 disappears.•Example: 15÷100 = 15100= 15.100= .1575 paise = 0. 75 (Zero is added to make two decimal places. Adding zero after 5 would change the value of 5 and make it 50)
