Sometime ago, somewhere up here, an author found his inspiration. The story was written; one for the ages. And the white whale became infamous. But, the adventures continue...

Begin this adventure by leaving your vehicle in the parking lot there. Remember to pay the fee—a small price to keep this jewel reserved for all generations. Next comes the trailhead, but then, which way? Left: the family rejoice. Right: more befitting of a long-term planner, because this (the Hickey Trail) is a tough descent first, but a leisurely stroll down after.

Higher up, The Squaw Peak Trail is an optional connector and crosses a 1642-foot peak. It also leads to the Devil's Pulpit, a perplexing stone pillar that demands full scrutiny yet impossible to access. Here is Monument Mountain's own leaning tower—desperately wanting to fall over but never allowed to. Stare hard enough and maybe the devilish creator will divulge any unholy secrets.

My Thoughts:
"An apposite description for this video is required," thought I, considering the literary giants who found refuge upon these mountain slopes. Thus, I followed the maddened captain on his doomed voyage and learned more about whaling than I ever did before; which was easy because I knew nothing before. But in the end I was a mere unworthy imitator, masquerading among an often imitated bunch.

Back to my own adventure: I chose right. I found this hike a bit short, but the leaning stone column was a worthy sidequest. How wholly unnatural the way nature could sculpt such forms. How intentionally masterful. Most others chose left at the trailhead.
Either way, this was a family-friendly hike, fun for all. A good introduction to hiking in the region.
