China Reports Surprisingly Strong Economic Growth

China’s economic growth has beaten expectations. Gross domestic product increased 5.3% in the January-to-March period from a year earlier. That’s higher than the median estimate of 4.8% in a Bloomberg survey of economists. Still, growth in industrial production and retail sales was slower than expected last month, and the property sector continued shrinking, with investment plunging 9.5%.
