Behind-the-Scenes Details Included:

– The Batwing crash was done using an incredibly detailed miniature built by the effects team at Pinewood Studios. The background, the city, and the explosion were all done in scale. Years later, Adam Savage helped restore the original model used in that scene.

– Jack Nicholson’s Joker makeup took about two hours to apply. His contract included a percentage of the film’s profits, which ended up earning him around $50–90 million—one of the biggest payouts ever for an actor at that time.

– Robin Williams was used as a bargaining chip to get Nicholson to sign on as the Joker. Williams later said he was angry about it and refused to work with Warner Bros. unless they apologized. Years later, he and Nicholson joked about it at an awards show.

– The idea of the Joker being the one who killed Bruce Wayne’s parents was not part of the comics. That was a story decision made by Tim Burton and the screenwriters to create a more personal connection between the hero and the villain. In most versions of the Batman origin story, the killer is Joe Chill, a random mugger who shoots the Waynes during a robbery.



– The Batman NES video game loosely followed the film’s plot but ended with Batman throwing the Joker off a building with no hesitation, making the ending much more direct than the film’s. I’ve played that game since I was a kid but only recently beat it—right before my son was born.

Tim Burton’s Batman laid the groundwork for how superhero films would be made from that point forward. It showed that comic book characters could work in serious, high-budget productions. It helped reintroduce Batman to a new generation, and it created one of the most recognizable movie versions of the Joker ever seen.
