The karst plateaus of the Northern Limestone Alps, part of the Eastern Alps, are made up of Triassic limestone more than 1 km thick. They contain around 15,000 caves, some of which are exceptionally long and deep. For example, three are longer than 100 km and deeper than 1 km. The presentation gives impressions of these caves and their exploration. Analysis of cave patterns, wall morphology and sediments, including radiometric dating, provides clues to speleogenesis and landscape evolution.
