This method makes 12 masks and uses 1 yard of 100% cotton fabric (ideally quilters cotton as it has a tighter weave) and 4 2/3 yards of elastic. Working with yardage and a serger is the most efficient way to mass produce masks. This method also uses the elastic most sparingly.(Currently there is a shortage in local stores) (You can also use corded elastic (knot the ends) or hair tie elastic.) (If you are unable to find elastic, see our tutorial for masks with tie strings.( This method requires a little bit more work/time but is equally as effective and potentially more comfortable.)

STEPS:

1. Remove Selvedge. and cut into 3 strips approximately 14in by length of fabric (parallel to selvedge).

2. Serge with 3 or 4 thread overlock along long edge of strips.

3. Sub Cut to 9in wide sections. Press each section in half right sides together to form a 9in x 7in rectangle.

4. Place and pin elastic along short edges roughly 1/2 in from top and bottom edge.

5. Repeat on the other side.

6. Stitch all the way around the rectangle leaving 2 in opening on bottom.

7. Clip corners and turn right side out through hole.

8. Press. Press into quarters and pleat /press in pleats. (approximately 1/2in pleats.)

9. Seam around/top stitch around entire mask.
