Das mittelalterliche Städtchen Orbe (479 m ü. M.) liegt mitten in der Plaine de l'Orbe (dt. Orbeebene), welche im nördlichen Teil des Waadtlandes die Wasserscheide zwischen der Rhone im Süden und dem Rhein im Norden bildet. Die Ebene liegt südwestlich des Lac de Neuchâtel (dt. Neuenburgersee) und wurde zuletzt vom eiszeitlichen Rhonegletscher und einer späteren Seenlandschaft geprägt. Heute ist die Region schweizweit eines der wichtigsten Gebiete im Gemüseanbau, was hauptsächlich auf die fruchtbaren Böden und das milde Klima im Lee der Jurakette zurückzuführen ist.

Der Kirchturm der Notre-Dame in Orbe diente einst gleichzeitig als Glocken- und als Wehrturm, weshalb auf dessen Spitze vier so genannte Echaugetten als Wachtürmchen angebracht sind. Oberhalb mehrerer Rebberge befindet sich das Dorf Rances (564 m ü. M.) am Jurasüdfuss.


The medieval town of Orbe (479 m above sea level) lies in the center of the Plaine de l'Orbe (Orbe plain), which, in the northern part of Vaud, forms the watershed between the Rhone in the south and the Rhine in the north. The plain lies southwest of Lake Neuchâtel (French: Lac de Neuchâtel, German: Neuenburgersee) and was characterized by the ice-age Rhone Glacier and a later lake landscape. The region is today one of Switzerland's most important areas for vegetable cultivation, which can mainly be traced back to the fertile grounds and the mild climate in the leeward side of the Jura mountain range.

The church tower of Notre-Dame in Orbe used to serve as both bell and watch tower. That is why there are four so-called Echaugettes as watch towers on its top. The village of Rances (564 m above sea level) is located above several vineyards at the southern foot of the Jura.
