This tale is based on the legend of Atargatis, the goddess of fertility and water.
Atargatis fell in love with a mortal man and gave birth to a daughter with him.
But after causing his death, she was overwhelmed with guilt and threw herself into a lake.
The gods, wishing to preserve her beauty, transformed her into a creature with the upper body of a woman and the lower body of a fish — the first mermaid legend in history.
