STORYLINE:
Tens of thousands of mourners paid their respects to the late Senator Edward Kennedy Friday - the congressman who was there for his constituents for nearly five decades.
For the second day, thousands of mourners lined up to pay their final respects to Kennedy as his body was in repose at the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum.
As mourners stood in line for as long as 2 1/2 hours, members of the Kennedy family, including some grandchildren, came out and thanked them for coming.
On hand to greet visitors at the closed-casket viewing were members of the Kennedy family, among them the senator's wife Victoria Reggie Kennedy, daughter, Kara Kennedy Allen, and nephew Tim Shriver, as well as nieces Victoria and Robin Lawford.
Kennedy's 81-year-old Jean Kennedy Smith, the senator's sister and the last surviving Kennedy sibling, also greeted visitors.
Smith, the former U.S. ambassador to Ireland, choked back tears. "This is a hard time for me," she said when asked to talk about her brother.
She was joined briefly by her son, William Kennedy Smith.
Kennedy's niece, Peggy Lawford, described the scene as "absolutely beautiful."
"It is gorgeous and everybody has been coming out last night. They were out here until two o'clock in the morning and the come from so far away and it just beautiful."
More than 21,000 people filed past Kennedy's flag-draped casket Thursday in a high-ceilinged room with spectacular views of Boston Harbour.
The library was supposed to close at 11pm (0300GMT), but the doors were left open until 2am (0500GMT) on Friday.
A five-person military honour guard stood at attention around the casket.
A private memorial for family and invited friends will be held at the library starting at 7pm (2300GMT).
U.S. Vice President Joe Biden as well as Senators John McCain, Orrin Hatch and Christopher Dodd are expected to speak.
A funeral Mass is scheduled for Our Lady of Perpetual Help Basilica in Boston on Saturday. President Barack Obama is expected to deliver the eulogy.
The family watched as the casket was loaded into a hearse for the journey to Boston.
