Arunachal Pradesh Observes Human Rights Awareness Day with Multi-Sector Discussions

The Arunachal Pradesh State Human Rights Commission (APSHRC) organised a one-day Human Rights Awareness Programme today at the DK Auditorium, Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly, Itanagar, commemorating the 77th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The event was graced by Justice P.K. Deka (Retd.), Chairperson of the Arunachal Pradesh Lokayukta, as the Chief Guest, along with Maj Gen Jarken Gamlin (Retd.), AVSM, SM, VSM, as the Guest of Honour.

The programme featured a series of detailed sessions highlighting the role of various commissions and institutions in promoting and protecting human rights across the state. Speakers discussed APSHRC’s initiatives in spreading human rights awareness, the judiciary’s role in upholding rights, and the Arunachal Pradesh Public Service Commission’s commitment to fair and transparent recruitment.

Other key discussions included the protection of child rights, the functioning of Child Welfare Committees, and the State Food Commission’s role in ensuring food and nutritional security. Presenters also spoke on women’s rights, the importance of transparency in governance through the State Information Commission, and the mandate of the State Legal Services Authority in strengthening legal awareness. Additionally, the impact of NGOs, CBOs, and CSOs in advancing human rights education—especially concerning HIV and drug abuse—was highlighted.

The Chief Guest also shared reflections on the importance of the Lokayukta in safeguarding justice and promoting accountability in Arunachal Pradesh.
