Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question...

Q: Hello Andrew -- I thank you for your YouTube lessons!
I would be forever grateful if you could cover the kind of Rhythms that are used in the music of Afro Beat. I recently read that James Brown was an influence for the Afro-Beat style. And - This has left me a little confused because I always thought of James Brown as being Funk. Can you please cover the Theory of the Afro-Beat rhythm structure, as well as, the role of the guitar. Because, there always seems to be two, or even three guitar players performing in these groups.
Thanks again, Marcelo -- Brazil

The roots of the Afro Beat style come from a number of popular African musicians and bandleaders. And, you are correct in that James Brown was very popular in West Africa and his music was of heavy influence to a lot of musicians. In part two of this series I will cover the role of the guitar in the AfroBeat groove.
