On September 18th 1974 25-year-old father of two James Thomas Stanley...known to his friends and family as "Tommy"...left his sister's home in Beckley, West Virginia. Days prior he had advised members of his family that he was leaving his home in Columbus, Ohio and headed for Florida. He added that he doubted he would ever return. Tommy gave no reason for his sudden flight. He left behind two young daughters and a great deal of confusion in his wake.

On September 23rd 1974 Tommy's green 1969 Fiat Spider was found abandoned alongside the northbound lanes of Interstate 95, about 4 miles south of the small town of Kenly, North Carolina. The keys were in the ignition and the doors unlocked. Tommy's personal possessions, including photo albums and clothing, were found inside the car. James Thomas Stanley has never been seen again.

GEOGRAPHICAL NOTE: In 1974 some sections of Interstate 77 were not 100% complete and minor detours to adjacent roadways was still required in some parts of Virginia and South Carolina. The direct southern driving route from Beckley, WV to Columbia, SC was essentially the same.
