The Earp Vendetta Ride was a deadly pursuit carried out by a federal posse led by Deputy U.S. Marshal Wyatt Earp through southeast Arizona from March 20 to April 15, 1882. The posse was hunting a group of outlaw "Cowboys" responsible for the shooting and maiming of his brother Virgil and the murder of his younger brother Morgan.
Background and Events
The ride was a direct consequence of the escalating conflict between the Earp family and the Cowboys, which began with the famed Gunfight at the O.K. Corral in October 1881. After that confrontation, the Cowboys sought retaliation.
December 28, 1881: Virgil Earp was ambushed and seriously wounded, with his left arm shattered by buckshot.
March 18, 1882: Morgan Earp was murdered while playing billiards in a saloon in Tombstone.
March 20, 1882: While escorting Virgil and his wife to a train in Tucson for safety in California, Wyatt and his men spotted two Cowboy suspects, Frank Stilwell and Ike Clanton, lying in wait near the tracks. As the train pulled away, the Earp posse pursued and killed Stilwell. Ike Clanton escaped.
