Sitting atop a hill, overlooking Hunting Creek, the Port of Alexandria, and the Long Bridge into the Capitol, Fort Lyon was an important part of the ring of Forts that surrounded the Capitol during the Civil War.

In early June 1863, an explosion, of unknown origins, ripped through the forts magazine, destroying the fort, and leaving a gigantic crater in the side of the hill, along the North King's Highway.

For many years, this land stood abandoned, and it was a popular spot for local teenagers to hang out, with it's breathtaking view of the city below. If you remember the great movie, "Remember the Titan's", after winning the regional championship, All American Linebacker Gerry Bertier was invited by his ex girlfriend and their friends to go to "The Hill" to celebrate. He turned down their offer, and chose to drive around the City of Alexandria, to "soak it all in". Tragedy struck, when a truck t-boned his car, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down.

The Huntington Metro station was constructed and opened December 17, 1983. It is a unique station, feature two entrances on two levels, a lower entrance at Huntington Avenue, and an upper entrance at North Kings Highway, which also features a diagonal elevator that runs along the escalators.

To visit here, it's very easy. Simply take the Yellow line to it's terminus at Huntington Metro. The North Kings Highway Entrance will give you access to some good restaurants and shops, and you can catch a great view from the right spots.
