"You're The Cream In My Coffee" Ben Berlin and His Orchestra

On Sept. 23, 1896, Ben Berlin was born Hermann Bick (or Biek) in a Russian part of Estonia. His name is spelled at different times as Bick, Bik Biek, and Byk. He was born in Tallinn, Reval (Estonia's capital).

He may have been the most popular musical figure to be born in Estonia, but he enjoyed his greatest success while living in Germany.

He was the first son of the merchant Leopold (Leib) Biek and his wife Marie (born as Marie Fleischacker).

Hermann's parents adopted the Lutheran faith. Hermann was baptized in St Nicholas (Niguliste) church in Tallinn.

In 1913, Hermann Biek attended the St. Petersburg Conservatory, training as a classical pianist and a composer. These were hectic times due to the war and Soviet revolution.

He married Vera Vinogradova.

His Belin career took off when he formed a jazzy Ben Berlin Dance Orchestra. Why "Ben"? He may have fallen under the influence of Ben Bernie and/or Ben Selvin.

His success as a recording artist ended when the Nazis took power in Germany. He emigrated to Paris and later to London.

He passed away in England in 1944 when he was only 48 years old.
