Sotheby's opened its doors to the general public on Friday with a collection of diamonds worth over 35 million dollars.

The real gem of them all is the "orange diamond".

It's believed to be the largest of its kind in the world.

APTV has this preview from New York.

Sotheby's has an auction next week of diamond jewellery - but only the very rich need apply.

On Friday the auction house opened its doors to the general public.

Going under the hammer will be a collection of some of the world's most precious stones expected to sell for a total of 35 (m) million dollars (U-S).

But the star of the sale is the 'vivid orange' .

This is an extremely rare diamond weighing 5.54 carats, and is expected to sell for around a million dollars.

"You know in years past we have sold 3 or 4 hundred carat diamonds, but we have never even seen a five carat "vivid orange" diamond. So I would have to say that of all the highlights, this is perhaps the most interesting that we have today."

Also going under the hammer is this enormous emerald-cut President Vargas Diamond weighing over 28 carats and estimated at about 800,000 dollars.

The legendary Vargas Diamond was discovered in Brazil in 1725 and was named in honour of Brazilian President, Getulio Dornelles Vargas.

Collectors from all over the world are expected to join in the bidding, by fax and telephone.

This customer clearly agrees with the saying 'diamonds are a girl's best friend.

VOXPOP: "It's their beauty, it enhances whatever you wear and it's very beautiful to have jewellery when you are all dressed up."

On the less pricey end of the sale is this elegant diamond necklace with over 130 round diamonds estimated at 350- thousand dollars.

Or this emerald diamond bracelet with matching earrings and rings all valued at only 275 - thousand dollars.

The array of diamonds and gemstones comes from a private collection and will be sold next week.
