Joseph Williams’s Style: Lessons in Clarity and Grace is one of our field’s most enduring and influential guides to prose style. Williams approaches style from a linguistic perspective: he identifies features of sentences, passages, and documents that lead readers to experience writing as clear, coherent, and graceful, and he shows writers how they can use these features to make their own texts more readable. This webinar, facilitated by Joseph Bizup, who revised the 11th edition of Williams’s classic book, will Bizup introduce Williams’s principles and then explore ways they can be applied creatively and effectively in classroom teaching.

Joseph Bizup is Associate Professor of English at Boston University, where he directs the College of Arts & Sciences Writing Program. His professional and research interests include writing program administration and writing pedagogy, writing in the professions, and approaches to argument and style. He is author of Manufacturing Culture: Vindications of Early Victorian Industry (2003), a co-editor of The Norton Reader, 13th edition (2011), and editor of Joseph M. William’s classic textbook Style: Lessons in Clarity and Grace, 11th edition (2013). He has also taught and directed writing programs at Columbia University and Yale University.
