Tetanus toxemia is produced by Clostridium tetani in dogs.

The incubation period of tetanus is between 10 to 14 days.

Muscle spasms is one of the clinical signs of tetanus.

In ascending tetanus the muscle spasm begins in the lower parts of the dog body and then spreads upward involving the muscles of the head and neck.

In descending tetanus the muscle spasm begins in the head and neck muscles and then spreads to other parts of the body.

Generalized tetanus the most common type of tetanus, often with difficulties opening the mouth as its initial manifestation; the muscles of the head, neck, trunk, and limbs become persistently contracted, and then painful paroxysmal tonic contractions which are know as tetanic seizures, are superimposed; the high mortality rate of about 50% is due to asphyxia or cardiac failure. Generalized tetanus in dogs is characterized by erect ears and muscle rigidity.

The diagnosis of tetanus is based on the dog history and clinical symptoms.

Lockjaw is an early clinical symptom of tetanus in dogs characterized by spasms of the jaw muscles and inability to open the mouth.

Localized tetanus is described as rigidity of a limb with evidence of a wound.

In dogs the tetanus mortality average is between 50 to 80 percent.

The treatment of tetanus toxemia in dogs includes wound care and the use of antibiotics

The equine antitoxin can produce tetanus antitoxin anaphylaxis during the intravenous administration.
