Shunning is a positive command of Our Lord and the Apostles in certain cases. One commentator had this to say: shunning is a type of admonition (warning) of the sinner, a kind of call to repentance (there’s a purpose to it…bringing a prodigal son back home to the Father’s House) by avoidance of physical communion (a true social distancing) — symbolizing that the obstinate sinner has broken communion with God and the Church. It is like a personal-social boycott against sin, and as such is actually a spiritual work of mercy. Therefore, it is not wrong to disinvite from an upcoming Thanksgiving meal that stubborn atheistic uncle who openly mocks religion in front of you and the children. Nor is it wrong to avoid fellowship with that divorced relative who now has a significant other living under the same roof.
