An anime about kawaii school girls being cute and living the life. Before you look away, come in, take a seat, and laugh hysterically. These three girls will make you laugh more than your girlfriend or wife has ever made you laugh. Then you’d realize if he or she had ever made you laugh at all during your relationship. Just kidding. I know you’re single while watching this, let’s be real. An anime about girl school clubs and making friends. (play K-on scenes). No no no no, it’s not like K-on at all. They play different music. It's like the daily lives of high school boys but instead of boys, you guessed it, they’re girls. The Art of writing a comedy series requires a high level of talent and dedication. But this one right here clearly took some toll on the author. The comedic genius of this show could not have come from the mind of a normal person. Writing a comedic punchline is something that any comedian could do, it is the “Randomness” aspect that separates the bests among the rest. The Randomness aspect of this show makes it so unpredictable that it’ll make you laugh over and over again. Asobi asobase is a comedy, slice-of-life anime that reminds you of your school days with your best friends. Just being crazy around each other doing God knows what. If you are a fan of Gintama, school rumble, daily lives of high school boys, etc. Then Asobi asobase has the same type of comedic creativity that you enjoy. We follow the story of 3 young girls Hanako, Olivia, and Kasumi are the main characters in this show. Each of them has a unique personality and characteristics that clash with one another. Throughout the series, we get to know their stories and their background as we watch their friendship grow. The author made sure that you won’t guess their personalities solely from their appearance and character design. From the glasses, short hair, and serious expressions. You’d think Kasumi is the smartest and most mature of the bunch but nope (show Kasumi test paper). From the blonde hair, blue eyes, and accent. You’d think Olivia is that foreign character that all guys would fall over but nope. From the twin tails and energetic behavior you’d think Hanako is the funniest of them all … and you’re right, she is. She is also the smartest of the three and often helps them study before exams.
Let’s pay attention to the quality of the voice acting from this show. The voice acting in this genre of anime, in my opinion, is one of the hardest voice acting jobs any seiyuu would do. For example, In this scene, Hanako gets intrigued and overwhelmed. How does the seiyuu convey that? Like this (play different sides of Hanako Ep. 8) Intrigued Hanako and overwhelmed/confused Hanako. See the difference? It’s like two different seyuus in one character. Imagine witnessing that performance live in the studio. Quite impressive if I do say so myself. These characters are gorgeous and Kawaii enough to be your dream waifus but the author made sure that you won’t fixate on that by offsetting their appearance with other things, bringing balance. For example, Olivia is certainly kawaii and beautifully drawn but she stinks. Kasumi has a HUGE personality but she has a weird fetish. Hanako pretty much came as advertised. She seems to be the normal one amongst them and by normal I mean she’s just less weird. She gives the appropriate response from all the randomness that happens around them. She is the smartest among the three but has a really weird fashion sense apparently.
This is certainly not like any other anime. The writing alone is really funny, enough to make you laugh until you’re out of breath. With the sound effects, music, and different art styles that it offers, Asobi asobase will entertain any viewer non-stop.
They spared no expense in portraying the character expressions at their best. The Randomness from this anime is what makes it unpredictable and endlessly funny. It makes you laugh while you’re confused as to what the hell is going on but you find yourself wanting more and more of that type of humor. This is the anime that you’d watch after a long stressful day. An anime that is fun to watch with your best friends. An anime that will undoubtedly make you laugh and smile the whole series. It takes your problems away with cute and funny girls. What more do you want? The first season has 12 episodes and is available on Netflix. Watch it, be a fan, and recommend it to your friends.
