The Gili Islands – Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air – are known for their white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant marine life. These islands are car-free, which means you can explore them on foot, by bicycle, or via a horse-drawn cart (called cidomo). The peaceful vibe of the islands was a refreshing contrast to the busier streets of Bali.
🚤 The Ferry Ride from Bali to Gili Islands
Taking the fast boat to Gili Islands was a scenic experience in itself. The turquoise blue waters, the feeling of cruising past smaller islands, and the salty breeze made the journey memorable. There are several ferry services running daily from Padang Bai in Bali to Gili Trawangan, and the journey takes around 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on sea conditions.

One of the highlights of this trip was snorkeling in the Gili Islands. I joined a guided snorkeling tour that took us to several amazing spots, including:
• The Underwater Statues near Gili Meno – An iconic and Insta-famous site featuring a circle of life-size statues submerged in shallow water.
• Turtle Point – A popular snorkeling site where I had the chance to swim alongside green sea turtles in their natural habitat.
• Coral Garden – A vibrant underwater ecosystem with colorful fish and coral reefs.
The visibility was fantastic, and the water was incredibly clear, making it perfect for underwater photography and videography. If you love marine life, Gili Islands offer some of the best snorkeling experiences in Indonesia!

Scuba diving in the Gili Islands was a life-changing experience. I joined a beginner-friendly dive with a certified dive school in Gili Trawangan, where the instructors were super helpful and ensured everyone felt safe and comfortable.
The Gili Islands diving scene is world-renowned because of the rich marine biodiversity, gentle currents, and warm waters. Whether you’re a beginner or a pro, this is a dive destination worth checking off your bucket list.
Apart from snorkeling and diving, the Gili Islands offer several other water activities:

🏝️ Where I Stayed in Gili Islands
I stayed at a beautiful beachfront resort in Gili Trawangan. The resort offered stunning ocean views, a pool facing the beach, and the perfect chill vibe. Most resorts and hostels on the island are just a short walk from the beach, and since there are no motor vehicles, the peaceful atmosphere is unmatched.
Waking up to the sound of waves and catching the sunset every evening was magical. I even enjoyed a romantic dinner on the beach under the stars – it’s truly a place that blends natural beauty with serenity.

Gili Trawangan, also known as Gili T, is the liveliest of the three islands, with beach clubs, night markets, and bars. I explored the local market, tasted delicious Indonesian street food, and even took a cooking class to learn how to make nasi goreng and sate ayam.
🐢 Gili Islands Marine Conservation
The Gili Islands are part of several conservation efforts to protect marine life and coral reefs. There are turtle hatcheries on the islands where baby turtles are nurtured before being released into the sea. It’s heartwarming to see the locals and organizations working together to preserve the underwater ecosystem.
