I want to thank the publisher, G.P. Putnam's Sons Books for Young Readers, for sending me an ARC. This is a book unlike anything I have read before. We have unique world-building, amazing characters, and a great magic system. I was hooked right away.

In this one, we follow Sascia, who is interested in finding out more about the Dark. Six years ago, monstrous creatures began emerging from the shadows, igniting Sascia's fascination with the darkness. Now eighteen, that fascination has turned into an all-consuming obsession. While exploring a place steeped in the Darkworld’s mystery, Sascia witnesses someone emerge from the abyss: Nugau, a genderfluid elf prince with a chilling mission to kill her. When their paths cross again, Nugau seems younger and doesn’t recognise her. A third encounter brings a new twist: Nugau stumbles out of the darkness, poisoned and confessing an undying love for Sascia. As Sascia unravels the mystery, she discovers two shocking truths: time doesn’t flow in a straight line between their worlds, and she’s tangled in a bitter war between humans and elves. With the fate of their worlds at stake, Sascia faces an impossible question: is it worth fighting for a love that might not survive the darkness?

The world pulled me in right away. We have this world with a Maw, which goes to a place that we aren’t sure about. Right now, it’s a tourist attraction, but when Maws first opened up around the world, a lot of terrifying creatures came out of them. We are talking about creatures of legend, and they caused a lot of issues in the world. Once they were gone, the Maws ' home became the place to see exotic plants and small animal life. However, there was always the chance that something bad could come out of the Dark. Light is the only way to keep the Dark at bay. Sascia works with the Dark and is drawn to it. It’s something that she can’t get away from, and she doesn’t know why. Then, we throw Nugau into the mix, who is unlike anything that has come out of the Maw. There are different versions of them, and each one is different. We don’t know what is going on, which adds so much to the story.

Sascia, then, finds herself in the actual Maw and has to come to understand Nugau’s people. As the layers start to peel back, we come to see how advanced this civilisation is. We start to see their culture and understand why they are the way they are. It’s a wonderful touch to the Dark and the worldbuilding itself. This merging of the two cultures allows us to see the world a bit more clearly. It also gives us a more in-depth look into everything, which is something that would not have worked had the story been laid out any differently.

Sascia is a great lead and very relatable. She is the family outcast. She had a chance to go to an Ivy League school, but didn’t meet expectations. Her grades and test scores are not up to standard. Her family doesn’t understand her obsession with the Dark and thinks she is wasting her life away because of it. She is misunderstood by so many people. She stays true to herself. She manages to overcome all of this while sticking to her own goals. She is independent and strong.

Overall, if you are looking for a book with strong characters and a well-developed world, then I encourage you to check this one out.
