Because it is hard just by watching it, to know exactly what has been the conditions of the shooting and the work and process…
I'm gonna explain it to you!
First of all, those sequences have been shot during two weeks of holidays in the Cevennes region in France. I have to say it is probably one of my favorite regions in France. It is still wild and well preserved, there are not so many people included during the summer season and it is a place where you feel free!
The way we traveled was in my car full of all our equipment and food. We have been camping all this time picking a different location every night. Actually, most of the Milky Way and sunrise timelapse have been taken straight from the tent!
And when I was shooting the Milkyway it was not really a restful night! I was continuously waking up checking the camera was still running, the battery was still charged and there was no condensation on the lens that would ruin the all sequence. Also have to change the setting sometime, the white balance in particular. It is particularly hard to shot such long time-lapses, especially because so many things can happen during this period of time. A tiny little thing such as the light of a car can make the all sequence be a total mess!
During those holidays we have been hiking quite a lot (almost every day actually). And those hiking allow us to access to very incredible views over the landscape so I had to carry all my equipment. And maybe it doesn’t looks like it but it is really heavy! My 200-500mm weight by itself 2.3kg and the camera alone almost 1 kg. So I had at least 7kg of gears every time and when you are hiking it makes a huge difference. Fortunately, I’m quite used to it and it was impossible for me to not bring my equipment. But I have to admit I didn’t do so many time-lapses during the day when I was with my girlfriend because as you probably know it takes a few hours for only a sequence so I was not feeling comfortable imposed this to her. So for the most part, I took it when I was alone.
But as you probably notice there is not so much timelapse during daylight. And it can be explained very easily most of the time the sky was completely blue so nothing really interesting to time-lapse! Instead, during that time we were doing climbing and canyoning. In the gorge, there are many places where you can do what is named psychobloc, wish consist to climb cliffs above the water. This way you can free climbing to height level and simply jump into the water afterward. I particularly love it!
Concerning the sunset timelapse, most of it has been taken while we were searching for a location to set the tent. Because the main thing was to set it before the sun gets done. So usually while the time-lapse was running we were putting up the tent.
While all those time-lapse have been shot, I had to process it and it is definitely more time consuming than the actual shooting…
