South Korean rice has made inroads into the Chinese market for the first time to meet an increasing Chinese demand for Korean-made farming goods and foodstuffs.

China's state-run agricultural trading company COFCO Corp. has imported about 130 tons of South Korean rice and put it on shelves of Chinese supermarkets.

It is the first time that the Korean staple grain has been exported to China, while South Korea imports about 205,000 tons of Chinese rice every year.

South Korean Agricultural Minister Lee Dong-Phil said during a ceremony marking the arrival of the Korean rice in Beijing that the export of rice "marks the first step to strike balance in the rice trade between the two countries."

The sale of South Korean rice to China came almost a decade after the Seoul government asked Beijing to open the market, which had been blocked by the Chinese government's tough quarantine standards.

The South Korean government expects that a total of 2,000 tons of rice will be shipped to China by the end of this year.
