Caste pride is everywhere in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli, and schools are the new scene of crime

In Tamil Nadu's Tirunelveli district, communities stand divided by caste and united in simmering resentment towards one another. And it begins very early in life — as early as schoolyard fights. These fights are often dismissed as bullying, but underneath the surface lies the assertion of caste pride — and the desire to enforce it violently. A recent case in the district’s Nanguneri town lays bare these fissures.
