During the reign of Emperor Heraclius (610-641 CE), there were indeed attempts to unify the various Christian sects under the authority of the Byzantine Empire.

One of the most significant efforts in this regard was the Monothelite controversy, which centered around the question of whether Christ had one or two wills. This controversy had arisen in the 7th century and had divided the Eastern and Western churches.

Heraclius attempted to resolve the controversy by promoting a compromise known as the "Ecthesis" or "Exposition of Faith," which affirmed that Christ had two natures but only one will. This position was opposed by the papacy in Rome, which insisted on the traditional view of two wills.

Despite Heraclius' efforts, the controversy continued to divide the Eastern and Western churches, and it was only resolved after his death in 681 CE, with the adoption of the "Third Council of Constantinople" and the affirmation of the orthodox view of two wills.

Thus, while Heraclius did attempt to unify the Christian sects under his authority, his efforts ultimately failed to resolve the deep theological differences between the Eastern and Western churches.
