POEM : Meeting At Night
POET : Robert Browning

Robert Browning was an English poet and playwright whose dramatic monologues made him one of the foremost Victorian poets. His poems show for irony, characterisation, dark humour, social commentary, historical settings and challenging vocabulary and syntax. His career began well, but collapsed for a time.

II
Then a mile of warm sea-scented beach;
Three fields to cross till a farm appears;
A tap at the pane, the quick sharp scratch
And blue spurt of a lighted match,
And a voice less loud, thro' its joys and fears,
Than the two hearts beating each to each!
