Durga Shakti Nagpal was an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer who was suspended in July 2013.
She faced a significant challenge when illegal sand mining by powerful mafia of the Yamuna River.
She ordered the closure of 20 illegal sand mining sites and also arrested several people.
She also worked to raise awareness of the issue of illegal sand mining and its environmental impact.
The sand mafia filed a complaint against Nagpal with the Uttar Pradesh government, alleging that she had demolished an illegal mosque wall in Kadalpur village.
Following her actions that angered the sand mafia, Nagpal was suspended on July 27, 2013.
Strong public support, including protests and Supreme Court intervention, led to her reinstatement in August 2013.
The suspension order was revoked after 1.5 months, and she was deputed to Kanpur afterwards.
