Mr. Van Bevern’s Columbia High School Varsity Orchestra, a combined ensemble of students from SOMS and MMS, opened our Board of Education meeting this month with a beautiful performance of seasonal favorites like Deck the Halls, Silent Night, and O Come, All Ye Faithful, continuing a beloved tradition that brings student voice and artistry to the final board meeting of the year.

Following the performance, the Board paused to recognize the service of three outgoing members Bill Gifford, Regina Eckert, and Board President Nubia DuVal Wilson. Each was thanked for their leadership, steady commitment, and dedication to students during a pivotal chapter for the district, setting an appreciative and forward-looking tone for the evening ahead.

The School District of South Orange & Maplewood proudly serves around 7,000 students across ten schools, including one early childhood center, six elementary schools, two middle schools, and Columbia High School – New Jersey's first high school. The district creates a learner-centered environment that offers multiple pathways for academic success through reimagined structures, support, and innovative instructional methods for all students.
