Yarrr, hold on to your shirt puffs, mateys, ‘cause we be headin’ to the Pleuribbean for this here sketch! In here we explore the mysterious pleural space, where we explain that pleural effusions are and explore the differential diagnosis for a patient presenting with one. We’ll talk about transudates and exudates, their causes, and how to differentiate between them using Light’s criteria. Then we’ll discuss causes of transudative pleural effusions like heart failure, nephrotic syndrome, and cirrhosis, as well as causes of exudative pleural effusions like pneumonia, autoimmune diseases (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis), and abdominal diseases (e.g. esophageal rupture), as well as hemothorax and chylothorax.
