Thanks to the 6.5.0 update for VOCALOID6, I was able to tune this entire cover in under a day ! ! ! (Though unfortunately, the 6.5.0 update did not change the fact that I still have to deal with all the trouble mixing gives me.... OTL)

Jokes aside, hey 💃✨ It's been a hot minute since I've worked with VOCALOID proper w. I've been tuning a little on the side every few months, but life has been especially crazy as of late what with trying to balance full time work with commissions and job hunting and IRL responsibilities. Frankly, it's a miracle I managed to get anything done for the ZOLA anniversary this year, but I guess KYO just wanted to cooperate that badly w

Originally I had another song lined up (one that I'd tuned and finished the literal week the 6.5.0 update came out actually, if it wasn't already obvious what a game changer it was w) but I'd been dreading dealing with the cover art for a while. Last week, while procrastinating on doing that, I opened V6 on a whim to stare at some old WIPs and blinked and this was done 👍✨

(Longer story being that I'd been working on a different Circus cover prior to the 6.3.0 update and felt bad that the file was... essentially unusable since I'd updated, which had me wondering if I could take the opportunity to go back and study Circus's tuning style properly using the new on-roll pitch drawing...)

My friends liked the in-editor mix a lot (in spite of me crunching the hell out of the instrumental—there's a reason I never shift the key more than 4 or so semitones waaugh) and ended up encouraging me to post it for ZOLA anniversary, so here we are 💕✨ One barely surviving Mio later 💕✨ (It's past 4am as I'm writing this... I finished the mix barely an hour ago I wanted to take a nap so... so many times today already....)

It was fun working with Grease Pencil, though ! ! ! I've gotten a lot more comfortable over the past year with navigating it and making clean line art in it, so in all the lines and colors probably took maybe an hour at most. Add in the sculpt tool, create a few in-betweens, and back it all up with the Wind Shake plugin in AviUtl and you have a really clean animated PV with only a fraction of the effort it would've taken to hand-draw every frame w.

The behind the scenes aside, I've been musing on my relationship to VOCALOID and cover-making for a while (what else is new? w). Every year I've been here in the description loudly proclaiming about how I'm going to release myself from my own expectations and start just doing what I myself want in the moment, and I think this year I almost did it. I did still suffer through mixing which made me want to bite the me from last week (SHFGJKHGKSFJGHSFJ) but like

It's been nice not having VOCALOID looming over me as a self-imposed obligation for once w. It's been nice just making things for my friends and me w.

I think in general I've been a lot happier being offline w. VOCALOID and cover making is such a small piece of what I do at this point, it's been comforting to just. Take time to focus on doing what I want for the hell of just sharing it with my friends w.

Anyhow—like I've said on tumblr, I'm not deleting everything or announcing a grand VOCALOID hiatus or anything w (despite the immediate reaction you might have to a song title like this haha). I'm just thinking about how I'm satisfied with what I've done and how much nicer it is to not define myself around what little I can showcase of myself on the internet (which maybe makes this song choice make a little more sense? w)

(Or, more accurately, what little I can showcase of my hobbies. This is art I make, but it's not exactly me, is it? ww)

That all aside, thank you for all the love and support y'all have shown my work w. It may be a while before I surface again, but I'll probably see you again for ZOLA anniversary next year. Enjoy ! ! !
