Days of the week in Irish

Описание к видео Days of the week in Irish

Our seven-day week comes to us from Christianity via ancient Rome who in turn adopted it from the ancient Hebrews. The names of the days were named after the planets which in ancient times were thought to revolve around the earth - the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn. Most Romance languages preserve the ancient Latin names. Irish similarly retains the ancient Latin names, but some names were changed to relate to Christian fasting practices. And like in most Romance languages, Sunday became the day of the Lord.

The days of the week in Irish are said in the genitive case - we literally say “The day of Monday” etc.
In the video I mistakenly say “Dé Domhnach” instead of the correct “Dé Domhnaigh” 🙈
But don't worry about the grammar if you are a beginner to Irish. There is plenty of time to learn grammar. In fact, most Irish people cite grammar being shoved down their throats in school as the reason for a dislike of the language 😢
