Join D’n’A Ventures as we adventure across the iconic landscape of the American southwest. On this adventure we stop at Goosenecks State Park. This State Park provides an amazing vista overlooking the meandering San Juan River. Located in Mexican Hat Utah, Goosenecks State Park provides visitors with vast views of the San Juan River and Surrounding desert landscape, from a vantage point that sit around 1000 feet above the canyon floor. Goosenecks is a prime example of an entrenched meander, a deep cut river bend that has formed from erosion over the past 300 million years. A truly rare geological formation. Over the span of 1.5 miles the river actually flows 6 miles due to the deep bends of the San Juan. The park offers an amazing opportunity to appreciate the uniqueness of the San Juan River, its headwaters originating in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, eroding through the desert as it makes it way to lake Powell. Goosenecks State Park is a primitive state park and does not offer much more than the view. There are no marked hiking or biking trails. However, there are picnic shelters and vault toilets. There is a 5 dollar charge per vehicle to enter the park, 10 dollars a night to camp. Camping at the park sounds like a great option because the lack of light pollution in the area takes star gazing to a new level. This is one of Utah’s Dark Sky Parks. If your are traveling to or from Monument Valley Goosenecks is a convenient stop. Pro Tip bring water on your adventure. There is no running water at the park and temperatures in the summer can easily reach triple digits. D’n’A Ventures highly recommends a brief visit to Goosenecks State Park, its a great place to eat some lunch and soak in the views of a deeply entrenched meander of the San Juan River.
