The South Gippsland Railway have preserved a 36km section of the former south eastern mainline between Nyora, Korumburra and Leongatha.

Always regarded as the most scenic mainline in Victoria, it used to branch off the eastern mainline at Dandenong and head south east through Cranbourne to Nyora. From Leongatha, the line continued further east through the Hoddle ranges to Yarram and Port Albert.

The last regular traffic beyond Leongatha was the Barry Beach (short branch west of Welshpool) oil trains which ended in 1992 and the track beyond Leongatha was dismantled in 1994. V/Line passenger services to Leongatha were then the only regular traffic on the line beyond Lang Lang and this ceased in 1993 with the section from Nyora to Leongatha being transferred to SGR in 1994.

Today the SGR operate a variety of railmotor and diesel hauled services through the beautiful south east gippsland countryside giving both railfans and the general public the opportunity to enjoy what was once Victoria's great southern railway.

At the time of writing, SGR are running mixed or passenger trains with Y135 on the second sunday of the month. This video features the trains that operated on Sunday 13 June and Sunday 11 July 2010.
